WOMEN & FAIR TRADE SALE & CULTURAL EVENT

@ DOMINCAN JOE – 515 SOUTH CONGRESS AVE.
NOVEMBER 10TH AND 11TH, 2007

This will be our fourth annual event supporting eight women’s cooperatives whose work is a living alternative to dominant forms of production and distribution imposed by free trade policies. The cooperatives bring their crafts and sell them during those two days. We also include a cultural perspective inviting Latin American musicians who play with traditional instruments. On Saturday the 10th we will have a fashion show of the clothes and jewelry sold by the 8 invited cooperatives. On Sunday the 11th we will show the film “China Blue”, a powerful story and a compelling journey into the harsh conditions of sweatshop workers in China. Shot clandestinely, this is a deep-access account of how the clothes we buy are actually made. The screening will be coordinated by Dr. Elvia Arriola with comments by Dr. Mercedes Lynn de Uriarte from UT Journalism Dept. We hope to have the producer/director with us to facilitate a Q&A discussion afterwards.

You can go to our website www.womenandfairtrade.org to find a broader description of this event. Please announce this event broadly. Thanks for any support you can offer.

Supporting the Campaigns of “Solve Act” and “Dream Act” (among others)

Among the proposals directly affecting immigrants that emerged, both positive and negative, there were several support campaigns, some supporting students, and others sending letters to our representatives. ILA offered information forums to dialogue concerning some of the proposals.

DREAM Act

The Border Social Forum: October 13-15, 2006 - Juárez, México

To confront such negative legislative proposals, and as a way to protest against the walls that divide us not only as family but as human beings, volunteers from ILA participated in the Border Social Forum as a show of support to our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Picnic

At the end of each project, the coordinators as well as the assistants end up a little tired due to so much information that is shared, above all with Project Monarch that takes several weeks. And because we believe a group is educated not only in the formality of an auditorium or a conference room but also via fun activities, for this reason in our final summer workshop we decided to get together with our families, and taking advantage of the fact our children are on vacation, we organized a picnic at a lake in the Austin, TX, area.

This took place on June 7th, and in addition to enjoying ourselves, we had a very moving workshop where we as immigrants learned where we come from, where we are now, and the distance that separates our native countries and the United States. We also took advantage of the occasion to give recognition to volunteers Inés Cariel and Courtney Siegel for their collaboration on Project Monarch and other projects.
